Open water swimmers are well aware of the importance of hats. There are numerous hats needed for venturing into cold water!
The first type of hat is a bright, colourful and close to the skull fitting cap which can be worn while swimming. There are several purposes this type of hat fulfills. Bright and colourful because you need to be seen. In open water, the weather can play a huge part on whether you can be seen or not. Imagine yourself in a black hat in a lake. Nobody would see you! Similarly you wouldn't be seen in a sea or river. Bright means exactly that! Bright and colourful, so you can be seen, bright and colourful so you can be spotted, bright and colourful so you feel safer in the water. Just go for bright and colourful and you won't go wrong! 😁😁 (Buy a hat here!)
The next type of hat is a neoprene one. This again is close fitting. However, the majority of these are black. So already conflicting with the bright and colourful hat above. But in the winter, you need the warmth that a neoprene hat is offering. This can be easily rectified by putting your neoprene hat on first and then adding a bright and colourful one on top! This way you gain the warmth, plus a little bit more added warmth, due to the layer and you are still bright and colourful!
The third hat is the woolly hat. Oh my goodness this is a deal breaker. When you take off your hat layers after being in the cold water, what do you think you feel? I can tell you! Cold, downright cold. To rectify this, have your woolly hat ready to get into place the minute you have removed your layers of swimming hats. Mission accomplished, preserving the heat around your head and a beautiful hat to show off.
