Congratulations to Catherine Ruddick, Staff Lloyd, Nina Orska, Karen Glass and Sarah Rodwell who all entered the water at 13:45 at Ryde Sands, Isle of Wight and then swam across the Solent, raising over £3000 for COSMIC in an event organised by Solent Swim School.
Their journey started in March of this year, when they began training for this big event. They are all members of our community group Solent Sea Swimmers and they all had a dream of crossing the Solent one day by swimming it!
Their training was mostly done in a cold sea with a qualifier also in fairly cold sea in the May. The Solent is one of the busiest seas in the UK. Not only did they have to dodge the waves, but also hovercrafts, ferries, cruise liners, container ships as well as other smaller craft and leisure users across two shipping channels.
They were accompanied by two RIB boats; "Team Endeavour" and "Off Duty" and a large fishing vessel "Wanderer ii", who acted as Mother Ship. Along with five kayakers all these support crew generously donated their time, skills and equipment.
The Solent Sea Swimmers were the first team of swimmers to cross the Solent of 2022!! We are very proud of them all. A fabulous achievement and a dream come true for them, while supporting COSMIC. They were welcomed ashore some two to two and a half hours later at Stokes Bay, Gosport to a champagne BBQ organised by other members of the swimming group...and of course some very shiny medals!
